Moraira

Moraira is a former small fishing village, now a town of 10,000 inhabitants dominated by second home tourism. It is part of the municipality of Teulada, in the province of Alicante on the Costa Blanca. Its old town preserves a rich cultural heritage and keeps some secrets for the visitor in the form of historic buildings, fortified churches, watchtowers, castles and walls. The main defensive fortresses and the most interesting cultural visits are the castle of Moraira, the watchtower of Cap d’Or and the fortified church of Santa Catalina.

Located at the top of the Cap D’Or mountain, in the municipality of Teulada-Moraira, on the edge of the cliffs, it is a typical defensive tower with a circular floor plan, totally solid up to more than half of it, with a height of eleven metres and reinforced walls.

Entry to the Cap d’Or watchtower was only possible by means of a rope that was thrown from the first floor, to prevent intruders from gaining access. Once inside, there was only a circular floor where the lookouts watched the horizon for any danger.
